MOHICAN GEOGRAPHIC NAMES

The majority of this information comes from "Appendix A: Recorded Land Transactions" and "Appendix B: Names, Locations, Relationships" in Shirley Dunn's book The Mohicans and Their Land 1609-1730, Fleischmanns, N.Y.: Purple Mountain Press Ltd., 1994. Other information has been gleaned from additional sources.

It has been thought that few Mohican geographic names were known. Upon listing these place names, one can see that this is not the case. The names do exist if someone cares to find them. Further, the recorded personal names of Mohican people attest to them as the original holders of the land. The deeds record the names of many more Mohican people who owned unnamed land.

Deeds were a European invention introduced into this country. The original people, including the Mohicans, used oral history to remember their transactions. Early European settlers sometimes used the original peoples' lack of written record to illegally claim land and record it under their own names, denying it forever to the original people.
